Let’s begin this week by talking about a “Marvel.” Today, I’ll put the spotlight on an athlete who sat at the top of the tennis world throughout his 23-year career.

Those are just some of the major milestones tennis legend Rafael Nadal achieved throughout his legendary career spanning 20+ years.

Nadal retired from professional tennis competition in 2024, but his figure looms large over the sport.

It seems that journey as a high achiever has yet to end. After conquering tennis for two decades, Nadal has set his sights on another hill to climb: Retirement .

… BUT WAIT!

Before we wax poetic about Nadal’s post-retirement career, we need to understand what made him a “Marvel” and a force to be reckoned with!

Becoming A Legend

Nadal was born in 1986 in Mallorca, Spain. His interest in tennis was fostered early on in his life when his uncle, a tennis coach, introduced him to the sport at the age of three.

Nadal also had an interest in football (or soccer). However, he shifted his focus to tennis and by the age of eight, he had won an under-12 regional tennis championship.

By 2001, Nadal made his professional debut at the age of 14. He ended the year ranked at no. 811.

Two years later, Nadal managed to breach the top 50 of the world’s best-ranked tennis players as he ended 2003 at no. 49.

After five years, Nadal became the no. 1-ranked tennis player in the world, becoming the first Spaniard to do so since the Open Era of tennis.

Nadal continued his legendary run throughout the next few years and decades, winning multiple titles along the way. Throughout his playing career, he was considered as one of the leading figures in tennis, alongside rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

He also had an 18-year streak of being in the top 10, a streak that unfortunately ended in 2023 after an injury forced him to end his season early.

Nadal announced in October 2024 that he intended to retire from tennis after playing under Spain for the Davis Cup Finals. Even though his run ended in the quarterfinals, Nadal retired from the sport as one of its most-decorated players.

So, what enabled Nadal’s rise to the top of tennis’ pecking order?

• Resilience

  Nadal clawed his way to the top in the world of tennis.

  Early on in his career, he was hundreds of spots away from the coveted no.1 spot.

  Instead of letting that deter his commitment to make it to the top, he used it as fuel to dominate the sport in ways that had been never seen before

  Aside from making a momentous climb to the top, Nadal faced another problem: Injuries .

  He incurred a long list of injuries throughout his career, ranging from elbow, foot, and stress fracture injuries to more aggravating ones such as hip and back injuries, and an abdominal tear.

  The injury bug riddled him throughout much of his career, and it cast doubts not only about his dominance but also his longevity.

  Nadal managed to overcome those concerns… and the best thing about it

  He did so humbly.

  In an interview with Bloomberg , he said “I always had doubts. And for me, the doubts are good, to be honest.”

• Rivalries

  Nadal dominated tennis alongside rivals like Federer and Djokovic.

  Throughout much of his career, he would have frequent showdowns with those legends, oftentimes in championship rounds of major tennis events like the U.S. Open, French Open, and even Wimbledon—often considered by fans as the most prestigious tennis tournament.

  Aside from using his rivalries to fuel his success and hard work, Nadal views them with a great sense of camaraderie, saying: “When you share a lot of moments with your rivals, you have some love for them because you are fighting for the same thing all the time.”

• Commitment

  The rise to the top often means giving up some aspects of one’s life to give way to other pursuits.

  For Nadal, this meant missing out on a normal childhood, as he spent most of that period honing his tennis skills.

… and now, Nadal is applying those same traits to his next adventure: Conquering retirement.

Nadal is only 40 years old, but he is now well into retirement after calling it a career in 2024.

His post-tennis endeavors include the creation of a hotel empire.

A Legend and A Business Mogul

In 2022, Nadal founded Zel Hotels , an upscale hospitality brand, in partnership with Melia Hotels International .

The brand’s first hotel was opened in 2023 at Mallorca, then it expanded to Costa Brava, both located in Spain. Other locations included Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

Aside from his hotel empire, Nadal has his hands full on his educational and sports businesses.

The Rafa Nadal Academy, which was opened in 2016, has since expanded into a network of tennis academies across the globe.

Clearly, Nadal’s grit, humility, competitiveness, and committed attitude turned him into one of tennis’ greatest athletes and a “Marvel” worth emulating.
