Discover how the business of "being extra" brought success and catapulted this then-underdog's rise to fame!

Imagine walking into a room where everyone seems to be playing it safe—blending in, following trends, and sticking to what’s familiar.

Then, out of nowhere, someone bursts in, draped in neon pink, glitter raining from her fingertips, and a presence so magnetic you can’t look away.

This person is not following the crowd but leading her own parade.

See that kind of fearless individuality?

That’s where the magic happens!

… and in today’s world, whether you’re building a brand or breaking into an industry, standing out is no longer an option—it’s a  necessity.

Let me introduce to you an example of this kind of person…

Who is Chappell Roan?

Chappell Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998 in Willard, Missouri, is not your typical pop star.

She didn’t rocket to fame overnight or follow the industry’s well-worn path to success. Instead, she crafted her own lane—one that’s vibrant, theatrical, and undeniably original.

Roan first gained attention as a teenager uploading covers on  YouTube, showcasing her powerhouse vocals and storytelling ability.

At the age of 17, she signed with  Atlantic Records  and released her debut EP,  “School Nights,”  in 2017.

… but her journey to the top wasn’t smooth.

When her career didn’t take off as expected, she was dropped from her label. However, rather than fading into obscurity, she doubled down, embracing her unique artistry and evolving into the fully realized pop spectacle she is today.

True enough, Roan’s persistence paid off.

In 2023, she released  “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,”  an album that not only reflected her artistic identity but also built a solid fanbase.

By 2024, her single,  “Good Luck, Babe!”  catapulted her into mainstream success, climbing the charts and proving that unconventional paths can lead to MASSIVE impact.

… but beyond the music, Roan’s rise to fame holds valuable lessons for businesses, marketers, and entrepreneurs looking to make their mark.

Let’s break down these lessons one by one.

  • Authenticity Is Your Superpower

In an industry saturated with polished, manufactured personas, Roan’s campy, over-the-top theatrics and unapologetic uniqueness make her stand out.

She embraces her quirks, using her voice, visuals, and performances to create an immersive world that feels unmistakably her.

    The lesson here?

Whether you’re a startup or an established brand, authenticity resonates.

After all, consumers crave genuine connections, and businesses that embrace their uniqueness—rather than trying to be everything to everyone—build stronger brand loyalty.

  • Build a Niche Before Going Mainstream

Before she hit the charts, Roan nurtured a dedicated fanbase, particularly within LGBTQIA+ and drag communities.

By catering to a passionate, engaged niche audience first, she created a foundation that propelled her into the mainstream without compromising her identity.

Marketing Takeaway: Instead of trying to appeal to everyone immediately, focus on cultivating a dedicated niche audience.

Always remember that a strong community will amplify your brand and help you scale sustainably.

  • Master the Art of Visual Storytelling

Roan’s aesthetic is a blend of ‘80s glam, drag culture, and outrageous, theatrical visuals. From her music videos to her stage outfits, every detail reinforces her brand.

The marketing lesson you can take away here?

Branding isn’t just about a logo or a tagline; it’s also about creating an  entire experience.

Whether it’s through design, content, or customer interactions, you have to ensure that every touchpoint reflects your brand’s essence.

  • Embrace Guerrilla and Grassroots Marketing

Roan didn’t rely on major-label backing to build her audience. She performed in small venues, engaged directly with fans, and leveraged social media—particularly  TikTok  —to spread her music organically.

Business Takeaway: Traditional advertising isn’t the only way to grow.

Grassroots marketing, personal engagement, and word-of-mouth can be more powerful than big-budget campaigns.

So, engage with your audience directly and let them become your ambassadors!

  • Boldness Creates Buzz

If there’s something worth noting about Roan, it’s that she isn’t afraid to push boundaries.

Whether it’s her music, performances, or fashion, she embraces bold choices that generate conversation.

Marketing Insight: Safe choices don’t make headlines. Brands that dare to be different, challenge norms, or take a stand on important issues often see stronger engagement and loyalty.

  • Resilience and Adaptability Lead to Long-Term Success

Being dropped by a record label could have been the end of Roan’s career… but it wasn’t.

Instead, she used it as motivation to refine her artistry and take control of her narrative. Now, she’s not just a pop star—she’s also a movement!

What business mindset can you adopt from her?

Setbacks are inevitable. The key to long-term success is resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to pivot when necessary.

Besides, the most successful brands and entrepreneurs are those who use challenges as fuel for reinvention.

See?

Clearly, Roan’s journey isn’t just an inspiring story but also a blueprint for anyone looking to build a brand, business, or career that truly stands out.

She proves that authenticity, niche community-building, bold branding, and relentless perseverance are key ingredients for lasting success.

So, whether you’re launching a startup, building a personal brand, or revamping your marketing strategy, take a page from Roan’s playbook!

Be different, be bold, and most importantly—be unapologetically YOU.

After all, the world doesn’t need another copy; it needs originals willing to lead their own parade.

Hope you’ve found this week’s topic interesting and helpful.
