From the desk of Miles Everson:

I’m thrilled to highlight another campaign in today’s “Gorillas of Guerrilla Marketing!”

For those of you who may not know, guerrilla marketing is an out-of-the-box strategy that empowers marketers to use unconventional tactics when interacting with their target audience.

I’m a fan of this strategy because it shows just how impactful such campaigns can be when executed properly and creatively.

For today, I’ll talk about a guerrilla marketing campaign that turned an everyday, financial tool into a life-saving object!

In 2024, it was found that 86% of Germans carry their bank card with them at all times.

However, only 26%—or 1 in four—carry their organ donor card. What’s more is that only 16% said they were registered with Germany’s online organ donation register.

Additionally, despite having 85% public support for organ donations, Germany has only had an organ donor rate of 11.4 donors per million people.

That gap is concerning, especially as thousands of patients are left waiting for life-saving transplants.

Mastercard saw this problem. That’s why it came up with a simple yet highly impactful solution to this challenge.

The Life Donor Card

As we’ve mentioned above, many Germans carry with them their bank cards daily.

Mastercard saw this as the ideal opportunity to encourage Germans to register as organ donors.

How?

By introducing the Life Donor Card —a card designed to double as a valid organ donor ID.

Turning a Mastercard bank card into the Life Donor Card was a relatively simple process. All a user had to do was activate the Life Donor feature through a banking app and fill out a consent form.

According to Peter Robejsek, former country manager of Mastercard Germany and executive vice president of Market Development for Asia Pacific at Mastercard, the Life Donor Feature provided Germans with another way to “easily document the willingness to donate organs.”

This brings us to the most important question: Was the initiative successful?

The results speak for themselves!

  • The Life Donor Card achieved a 50% conversion rate.
  • Nearly 85% preferred the simpler registration provided by the Life Donor Card.
  • 44.5% of Germans were willing to switch banks just to have the simplified donor consent provided by the Life Donor Feature.

The Life Donor Card initiative also received accolades from prestigious organizations like The Clio Awards, The One Show, and D&AD!

These results show that the Life Donor Card was a successful initiative.

By turning an everyday item into a life-saving tool, Mastercard was able to build goodwill among its target audience… and more importantly, it turned a financial tool into a powerful medium for achieving societal good.

Overall, this story shows just how impactful guerrilla marketing campaigns can be in generating positive attention for a brand and resolving a pain point everyone wants to help solve.

So, if you’re also thinking of a way to use your brand to make a positive impact in society, you might want to consider Mastercard’s playbook.

Hope you’ve found this week’s guerrilla marketing insight interesting and helpful.
