| Eager to know more? Keep reading below! The worlds of business and tech were left in shock in April 2026 when Apple announced that Tim Cook, its CEO for 15 years, will be stepping down on September 1, 2026. Cook took over as CEO in 2011, and to say that his tenure was nothing short of successful is an understatement. Apple’s market value grew from USD 350 billion in 2011 to USD 4 trillion as of June 2026 under Cook’s stewardship. Additionally, the tech giant grew into a global juggernaut through massive improvements in its operations and supply chain. Cook also oversaw Apple’s transformation into a digital services giant through offerings like iCloud, Apple Music, and the Apple Store. This transformation enabled the firm to make money not just from selling devices but also from providing cloud-based services. Starting off from all of that, Apple’s next CEO has big shoes to fill. His name? John Ternus!
Ternus is an Apple veteran, and while his name isn’t a household name (yet), there’s a good reason as to why he was chosen to lead Apple in the first place. He earned his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. After graduating, he joined Virtual Research Systems as a mechanical engineer responsible for designing virtual reality headsets. He then joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and worked on the Apple Cinema Display. Ternus’ involvement in the creation of Apple’s Cinema Display revealed an important trait that he would carry throughout the rest of his career: Going the extra mile. You see, Ternus reviewed a version of the Cinema Display that he had spent months working on. Unfortunately, he noticed the back of the display had 35 grooves installed instead of 25. Ternus knew that most won’t spot this discrepancy, but instead of letting it go, he pointed it out, even if it meant doing extra work. Ternus justified his decision by emphasizing that going the extra mile is better than just putting in the minimum amount of effort that’s needed. … and this willingness to go the extra mile is what exactly propelled Ternus’ career forward. In 2013, he was appointed as the vice president of hardware engineering. This role entailed overseeing the development of popular products like the AirPods, Mac, and the iPad.
Ternus would eventually be given the reins of overseeing the iPhone’s product development in 2020. In the year that followed, he was promoted to senior vice president of hardware engineering. This promotion meant Ternus was leading all of Apple’s hardware engineering offerings and was responsible for overseeing the development of the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Airpods, and other hardware offerings. Ternus also played a pivotal role in Apple’s most recent hit, the MacBook Neo, the company’s entry-level laptop priced at USD 599. The MacBook Neo has been universally praised for punching well above its weight performance-wise and for having eye-catching aesthetics.
Another product that Ternus was closely involved with is the iPhone Air, a thinner yet durable take on the iPhone product line. The new phone has been praised for its sleek and compact design.
Once he officially assumes the role of CEO, Ternus is expected to be a more hardware- and product-oriented executive, given his more technical background. That said, what enabled Ternus’ rise to the top?
— It will take time to see how he’ll shape up as CEO, but if his recent successes are any indication, then it’s reasonable to assume that Apple is in good hands. The traits he possesses also explains why he’s a “Marvel” in the worlds of businesses and tech. His hands-on approach, penchant for paying attention to details, and socially savvy nature has propelled his rise to the top. So, if you’re looking for someone to draw inspiration from in today’s fast-moving business landscape, it might be worth taking a page out of Ternus’ playbook!
