From the desk of Miles Everson:

Hi!

I hope your week is off to a wonderful start!

Today, we’re going to talk about one of our “Marketing Marvels.” Every Monday, we put the spotlight on outstanding individuals and highlight the marketing and business insights we can learn from them.

In this article, we’ll discuss one of the people who was,  and still is , instrumental in the operations of popular social media and news aggregation platform, Reddit!

This “Marvel” has helped grow this social media platform into one of the Internet’s most-visited websites!

Today’s social media landscape is dominated by advanced algorithms that consistently push content to users.

Once a user spends enough time viewing a post, be it a reel or a static image with a caption, algorithms would consistently push similar content. In certain cases, sponsored content would even be pushed at the top of the queue.

While this is highly useful in curating the content you want to see, search results tend to be skewed based on what the algorithm will decide to show you, making it difficult to find what you were searching for in the first place.

Furthermore, today’s artificial intelligence (AI) frenzy has made things more complicated. Vast swaths of AI-generated content now dominate social media platforms, blurring the lines between what’s real and fake in some cases.

All this has resulted in a deep yearning for authentic, human-generated content that’s both relatable and reliable.

That’s why these days,  Reddit, a social media platform founded 20 years ago and one that started to grow exponentially in the late-2010s, is now seen as a reliable source of information and is one of the Internet’s most-visited websites!

As mentioned in a past article, this social media platform functions almost like a forum (harkening back to the early years of the Internet), where users can post their own content or comment on the ones posted by others.

Posts found on Reddit are organized by subject into user-generated boards known as “subreddits.” Aside from being commented on, posts found on subreddits can also be upvoted or downvoted by users.

If a post is upvoted enough, it’ll show up on the front page of Reddit.

… and due to this uniqueness, Reddit grew its daily active users from 54.8 billion in the first quarter of 2021 to 110 million by the second quarter of 2025. Moreover, over 50 million Americans log in daily to the website!

In today’s landscape, those numbers are impressive, especially when Reddit is competing against behemoths like  TikTok  and  Facebook.

Reddit’s success is a great story, but it wouldn’t have been possible for it to reach those heights if not for one of its key pillars.

Two weeks ago, we put the spotlight on  Alexis Ohanian , but today, we’re going to take a look at another important person in Reddit’s story.

His name?

Steve Huffman!

During his younger years, Huffman had a deep interest in computer programming and this subsequently led him to begin programming at the age of eight. He earned his computer science degree from the  University of Virginia  in 2005.

After graduating, he met fellow co-founder Ohanian and came up with the idea for Reddit, after the first idea they submitted to  Y Combinator —an app enabling users to order food through SMS—was rejected.

Once the pair grew their user base, Reddit was eventually sold to  Condé Nast Publications  for roughly USD 10 million to 20 million.

Huffman stayed until 2009, leaving as the company’s acting CEO. In 2015, he returned in the same role.

From then on, Huffman oversaw multiple changes to the platform that included the development of a mobile app, a website refresh, the ability to host videos and images on the platform, and a slew of content moderation guidelines. More importantly, he led efforts to make Reddit more advertiser-friendly.

All of these culminated in the initial public offering of Reddit in 2024, which valued it at USD 10 billion… and as of 2025, that value has risen to USD 34 billion.

As a result of Reddit’s massive growth, Huffman is now a recently-minted billionaire. In 2024, he was also named by  TIME  as one of the 100 most influential individuals in AI.

It’s clear he’s such a MASSIVE success, but what are his secrets?

Huffman credits much of his success to a mantra he picked up in his younger years:  Act quickly and often on his goals.

According to him, he’s followed this principle every day for the past two decades. He says that if you want to be someone who works really hard, then you should make efforts to work hard.

This is best summed up in his own words:  “You aren’t who you are, you are what you do.”

Another key to his success is  “reframing stress with gratitude,”  a strategy he learned from the memoir,  “Man’s Search for Meaning,”  written by psychiatrist and World War II survivor Victor Frank.

He said the book changed his views on stress because the life he has is the result of the work he’s done and the job he has.

By adopting this mindset, Huffman emphasized that he’s felt less stressed and has recovered faster from the challenges he faces as a CEO of a social media platform.

Aside from adopting these principles, Huffman emphasized the importance of sleep, because it enables you to think clearly and manage your stress better. Last but not the least, it’s important to set aside time for you to think about your future.

Given these secrets, it’s unsurprising to see Huffman become successful!

So, if you’re looking for someone to look up to or emulate, then you should definitely consider Huffman’s story, as he embodies how important decisiveness and the ability to think clearly are in a person’s rise to the top!

Hope you’ve found this week’s topic interesting and helpful.
