Netflix’s “Queen of Content” has greenlit many award-winning shows. Here are the secrets to her success! Netflix has solidified itself as the foremost streaming service in America despite competing against the likes of Disney (DIS) and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) . As of last year, the streaming behemoth had the biggest number of subscribers in the U.S., with over 67 million. Hulu , Disney+ , Paramount+ , and HBO Max are trailing by a wide margin, at 39 million, 36.5 million, 34.5 million, and 23.8 million subscribers respectively. Simply said, Netflix is currently the leader of the streaming industry, and with its impending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and studio assets, it seems the company is poised to keep its lead for years to come. Netflix wouldn’t have secured this position if it weren’t for the company’s award-winning content throughout the years. At present, the firm has won roughly 281 awards and has been nominated 514 times. All these accolades wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the company’s “Queen of Content.” Her name? Bela Bajaria !
Bajaria is a British Indian-American media executive and was appointed the chief content officer of Netflix in January 2023. She was born to parents of Indian descent. She spent her early years in London before migrating to the U.S. at the age of nine. Prior to entering college, Bajaria entered multiple beauty contests and was even crowned the winner of Miss India Worldwide in 1991. Upon completing high school, Bajaria pursued a communications degree and graduated from California State University in 1995. Bajaria’s graduation from university marked the beginning of her foray into the entertainment industry. She accepted an assistant position with CBS in 1996 in the movies and miniseries department. She briefly held a managerial position at Warner Bros. Television Studios but she went back to CBS in 1997 as a director. Eventually, she was promoted to senior vice president of CBS Movies and Miniseries in 2002. Bajaria eventually joined Netflix in 2016 to become the head of the company’s unscripted and scripted content division. Within the span of two years, she was also tasked with overseeing international content, helping the firm become a global studio.
In fact, one of the projects she oversaw led to the highly-acclaimed Korean TV show “Squid Game.” Aside from the Korean TV show, Bajaria has overseen the creation of hits like “Bridgerton” and “Emily in Paris.” After seven years overseeing the production of content, Bajaria finally became the chief content officer of Netflix in 2023. Since her promotion, she has overseen the rapid expansion of the streaming service’s content catalogue. She also deploys roughly USD 18 billion annually on content in 50 languages across 190 countries. This includes Netflix’s push into live events and sports with specials such as “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” and the Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA (formerly known as Screen Actors Guild Awards).
Bajaria also orchestrated deals that led to the hosting of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) content and National Football League (NFL) games in Netflix’s streaming platform. That’s not all! Netflix inked a partnership with Spotify last year to stream a select number of video podcasts from Spotify Studios and The Ringer in early 2026. Moreover, the company inked an exclusive video podcasting agreement with iHeartMedia for over 15 original and popular iHeartPodcasts. Due to her efforts, Bajaria has been named to the “Most Powerful Women” lists of Forbes and Fortune . She also landed on TIME Magazine ’s “TIME 100” list. … and now, with the impending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Bajaria is expected to exert even more influence and make more impact in the entertainment industry. That said, what led her to becoming a successful media executive? Bajaria used failure as a stepping stone to her success . DYou see, prior to her stint at Netflix, she was fired from her role as president of Universal Television. According to her, the first few months after her firing was tough, as she found it difficult to separate her personal identity and her professional status. Instead of letting this setback overwhelm her, Bajaria accepted her firing and used it to inspire her in pursuing the next chapter of her career. Another trait that catapulted to her success was her willingness to learn . According to Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, Bajaria took “the energy and time to really figure out Netflix,” taking a deep dive into learning what makes things work, taking the time to know key people behind every production and how to reach out to them. Given these traits, it’s clear why Bajaria is the “Marvel” that she is today. By being willing to learn and using failure as an opportunity to find her next chapter in life, she was able to attain the success she currently enjoys. So, if you’re looking for someone worthy of emulation, keep Bajaria’s story in mind! Hope you’ve found this week’s topic interesting and helpful.
