Those who age gracefully and perform well in their older years tend to follow this principle! Imagine this: What if the secret to aging gracefully isn’t found in supplements nor intricate workout regimens but in your kitchen and what you eat ? Well, that’s exactly what this long-term study found out! So for today, we’re going to take a deep dive on the findings of the research! The Connection Between One’s Diet and Aging Gracefully There has never been a silver bullet nor a one-size-fits-all for healthy aging. Some claim that a strong workout regimen is the key. Others point to supplements in combination with workouts. Even though these approaches are valid, these have led others to ignore the most important aspect of healthy living: Diet . In a 30-year study published in Nature Medicine , researchers tracked how closely the over 100,000 participants adhered to healthy diets and analyzed which of these facilitated healthy aging—defined as reaching the age of 70 without any chronic health conditions, strong mental health, and the ability to move freely and climb stairs. Researchers discovered that out of all the participants, only 1 in 10 were considered healthy agers. … and you know what these healthy agers had in common? They all consumed a diet that’s rich in plant-based foods, low in highly processed food items, and a moderate consumption of animal-based products. Another discovery is that out of all the diets analyzed, it was the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) that was the most impactful in improving the odds of maintaining strong mental and physical well-being at age 70. Researchers found that those who followed the AHEI diet had an 86% higher chance of living to 70 without major chronic conditions compared to those who followed the diet the least. Adherents of AHEI also had greater chances of living healthily at age 75 compared to those who follow it least. To sum it up, the researchers’ findings suggest that “dietary patterns rich in plant-based foods, with moderate inclusion of healthy animal-based foods, may enhance overall healthy aging, guiding future dietary guidelines.” … but wait, now that you know the health benefits, what exactly is the diet that makes those possible? The AHEI diet was developed by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers to lower the risk of acquiring chronic health conditions and promote the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. This diet also promotes limiting the intake of animal-based products and discourages the consumption of highly processed and sweetened foods. See? You don’t have to strictly adhere to or keep an eye on the latest supplements or fitness trends to start living a healthy life. Instead, the best way to get started is by paying attention to what you eat and using it as a stepping stone to live a healthier life. By doing so, not only will you pave the way for a healthier lifestyle today, but also prepare the way towards aging gracefully as the years go by! Besides, age shouldn’t be a detriment in living the life we want. EXCITING NEWS AHEAD The world of work has shifted, and there’s no going back.
