Building A Golden Dynasty: Find out how this executive turned a struggling franchise into a dominant one! In the world of professional sports, one of the most challenging and rewarding achievements for a franchise is to transform from a struggling organization to a dynastic one. This is a monumental achievement because there are professional sports teams that have achieved considerable success only to fade and lead to years of mediocrity. Take the National Basketball Association (NBA), a professional basketball league, for example. Throughout its history, the league has seen many teams reach notable levels of success, only for this period of excellence to fizzle out and lead to years, if not decades, of decline. One of the more notable examples of this is the Golden State Warriors. Founded in 1946, the team achieved some success in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. However, from the 80s until the early 2010s, the team’s success was mixed, with years of moderate success interspersed with poor performance and near mediocrity. Needless to say, during that period of time, the franchise was struggling, with no clear pathway to a championship. … but that was until this executive stepped in. During his tenure, the Golden State Warriors won a total of 4 NBA championships and the franchise solidified itself as one of the league’s most recognizable and valuable teams. So, who is this sports executive we’re referring to? Robert Michael “Bob” Myers! Born on March 31, 1975, Myers grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in Danville, California, where he also attended high school. After graduating from high school, Myers went on to study at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he majored in business and economics and was also a part of its collegiate basketball team. Coincidentally, he won a championship with the team in 1995. Once he finished college, he went on to pursue a law degree at the Loyola Law School and in 1997, he interned at Tellem and Associates, where he became an associate of Arn Tellem, a prominent sports agent and currently, an executive. Under Tellem’s tutelage, Myers became an expert in contract negotiation and player recruitment. Throughout his 14-year career as a sports agent, Myers would go on to negotiate contracts totaling more than USD 575 million. Myers finally began his career as an NBA executive when the Golden State Warriors hired him as an assistant general manager (GM) in 2011. He was initially expected to apprentice under then-GM Larry Riley. However, a year later, Myers was promoted to GM. During Myers’ tenure as GM from 2012 to 2023, the Golden State Warriors made six NBA finals appearances and won 4 championships during that stretch. He also made a name for himself by drafting players like Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, Jordan Poole, and signing superstar Kevin Durant—players who were integral to the team’s multiple championship runs. Myers was named as NBA Executive of the Year in 2015 and 2017. So, what propelled Myers’ success? During his tenure as GM, Myers leveraged both analytics and human insights in getting players his team needed. He not only prioritized personnel that fit the team’s needs on paper, but also those that fit the team culturally. Aside from this, he valued the importance of building a vast network of contacts. It was Myers’ network early on in his professional journey that enabled him to kickstart his career as an agent, and eventually, as a sports executive. Last, and most importantly, Myers was an expert at personality management—a trait crucial in professional sports teams—as he was known for being able to unite the players in his team towards a common goal, cultivating positive communications between ownership and coaches, and easing locker room tensions between players. Myers was also known for fostering a collaborative approach with his colleagues as he made it a habit to work with and listen to them when it came to professional and team matters. — By the time Myers left his post as GM and team president in 2023, he had solidified himself as one of the NBA’s most talented and intelligent executives. In his 12 years as an executive, he built one of the NBA’s most successful teams and ushered in a period of immense growth and success for the Golden State Warriors, a franchise that was struggling to stay competitive and relevant before its championship run. With all this taken into account, it’s unsurprising to see Myers become a “Marvel” in the world of professional basketball and sports as a whole. So, if you’re looking for someone to look up to, especially in your career progression, then Myers’ story is definitely an example you should keep in mind!
