The Joy of Motion: Here’s why playing a sport might be your best bet at relaxation!

Picture this: You just finished a hectic workday, hopping from one meeting to another while doing what you can to meet your deadlines.

You managed to accomplish all of those things and more… so by the time you close your laptop, you feel stiff and mentally drained after hours sitting on your chair.

The fix is, of course, finding a way to relax.

The thing is, when one thinks of relaxation, it’s easy to assume that it looks like spending more time on the couch.

… but what if what you really need to relax and decompress is movement ?

You see, sitting for long stretches leaves your body stiff and tired. Moreover, it leaves you with a tired mind.

All of that shows up as tight shoulders, sore muscles, and low energy.

Did you know that all these aren't just a result of sitting for long hours?

According to Harvard Health , mental stress can lead to tense muscles, headaches, or neck and back pain. What’s worse is that when your body suffers from physical stress, the latter leads to even more mental stress.

In short, you end up in a stressful feedback loop that seems hard to overcome.

When your body and mind feel worn out, it becomes harder to relax and decompress.

So, what should you do?

Hmm…

You might want to consider playing a sport!

We’re not saying you should go all in and be hyper competitive, especially if you aren’t the sporty type to begin with.

Finding a sport that fits your lifestyle and interests will likely take time and a fair bit of trial error… but trust us, the benefits are worth it:

  • It helps in loosening muscles that have laid dormant for hours.
  • It alleviates the strain caused by sitting for hours.
  • Sports activities help you take your mind off of your work and encourage you to focus on something else.
  • The physical activity involved in playing a sport helps mitigate anxiety and depression.

We get it. The words “rest” and “relaxation” are often associated with doing nothing or doing activities that aren’t physically strenuous.

However, playing a sport can be a form of relaxation too!

Said simply, sometimes, the best way to relax is when your body is in motion. Playing a sport after work could help you walk away mentally refreshed and ready for what comes next.

So, how do you get started?

  • Pick a sport you enjoy- You don’t have to pick a sport for competition’s sake. All you need is to choose something that’s fun for you.

  • Prioritize enjoyment- The goal in playing a sport doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be the best at it. Your first and most important goal is to simply get moving and enjoy the experience.

  • Play with friends or family- Inviting a friend or family member to play a sport with you can make the activity more fun. It also helps you stay consistently committed to your sport. As a bonus, bonding with others through a sport can help strengthen your relationships with them.

To sum it all up…

Sitting for hours during your workday can leave you mentally tired and physically lethargic.

Playing a sport is one of the simplest ways to recharge because it helps you relax and focus on other things outside of work!

Moving your body can bring a sense of calm and joy that’s hard to find by just sitting still or idling away after a long workday.

So, if you haven’t yet, consider playing a sport. Bring a friend or family member along while you’re at it.

You’ll see, your mind and body will thank you for it once you finally take that step.

Have a happy and active weekend, everyone!
