The  New York Knicks, one of the  National Basketball Association ’s  (NBA)  most storied teams, spent 50+ years without having won a championship.

It also has the honor of having one of the most engaged fan bases in all of professional sports.

Even in seasons where the team struggled, fans continued to fill the seats at Madison Square Garden, the home arena of the Knicks.

The Knicks and its fans endured that for 53 straight years… until 2026.

In the past three years or so, the Knicks has slowly climbed the top of the NBA ladder. In the past three NBA seasons, the team has built its identity as a top NBA contender.

After making the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023, the Knicks reached the conference finals in the following year.

Fast forward to 2026…

The team finally ended its championship drought, winning the NBA Championship in dominant fashion.

Not only did the Knicks confidently advance through the playoffs but it also won against heavyweights like the  Cleveland Cavaliers  and the runner-up  San Antonio Spurs!

Years of heartbreak and losing seasons have finally paid off.

That said, the Knicks wouldn’t have been able to reach those heights without this “Marvel.”

His name?

Jalen Brunson!

Brunson has been a key player for the Knicks since 2022.

He is also the son of former NBA player Rick Brunson. Immersed in the atmosphere of the NBA from a young age through his father, he spent his youth and teenage years honing his basketball skills.

This involved training alongside collegiate teams and professional athletes like Derrick Rose.

Brunson had a productive high school basketball career, playing a prominent role for his team throughout his tenure. Prior to entering college, he was ranked as one of the nation’s best point guards.

He also won a gold medal playing for the USA National Team’s FIBA Americas Under-18 Team in 2014.

In the following year, Brunson committed to  Villanova University, helping the team win the NCAA Division I championships in 2016 and 2018.

Becoming An NBA Star

Brunson declared for the NBA draft in 2018 after spending three years playing for Villanova.

Even though he had a great collegiate career, Brunson was drafted 33rd by a rebuilding  Dallas Mavericks  in a talent-laden draft.

Brunson’s playing stint with the Mavericks was largely successful. He built a reputation for being a dependable player during his rookie and sophomore seasons.

Brunson’s hard work eventually paid off as he blossomed into a breakout player for the Mavericks. He would play prominent roles in the 2021 and 2022 playoffs.

The Mavericks made it to the Western Conference finals in 2022. However, the team lost to the  Golden State Warriors, the team that won the NBA championship in that year.

Brunson switched teams once the 2022-2023 NBA season rolled around, signing a four-year USD 104 million contract with the Knicks—a team he had deep ties with.

His father spent part of his playing career with the Knicks and knew then-head coach Tom Thibodeau well, having served as one of his assistant coaches throughout his coaching career.

Brunson then established himself as one of the NBA’s biggest stars over the past few years with the Knicks. He has helped the team become a consistent championship contender.

That said, the path to a championship wasn’t easy.

Overcoming Adversity

Even though the Knicks was a championship contender, the past few years were anything but a cakewalk for Brunson and the team.

The team suffered a second round exit in 2023. In the following year, the team made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Semi Finals. In 2025, the Knicks made it to the Conference Finals, only to be beaten by the  Indiana Pacers.

2026 was different, though.

As mentioned previously, the Knicks won the NBA championship and ended its 53-year championship drought… thanks to the efforts of Brunson.

Brunson didn’t just will his team to victory. He did so in dominant fashion, scoring 45 points in the Knicks’ closeout game against the San Antonio Spurs.

For his efforts, Brunson was unanimously voted as Finals MVP, securing his place as one of the best players to have ever donned a Knicks jersey.

So, what fueled Brunson’s rise to the top?

  • Resilience

Brunson’s rise to stardom wasn’t easy. Aside from earning his playing time and landing a leading role in his teams’ respective rotations, he had to overcome doubts about his physical prowess and ability.

Standing at 6’2, Brunson was at a physical advantage when playing against other NBA players. The league’s average player height is 6’7 for reference.

In connection with his physical limits, many doubted the Knicks’ decision to offer him a USD 100 million contract. Many wondered if he was worth that much, given that at the time, he was still a rising star.

  • Staying Ready

Brunson credited his father for imbibing in him a next-man-up mentality.

According to him, watching his father work hard for his success inspired him.

That’s why each time an  “opportunity came about to step into roles”  that were asked of him, he was ready and eager to step up and work even harder.

  • Hard Work

Brunson’s resilience and ability to seize opportunities wouldn’t have been possible if he weren’t a hard worker.

At each stage of his basketball career, he made sure to push himself to achieve new heights.

This meant spending countless hours at the gym to build his strength and body, the basketball court to refine his skills, and the film room to identify how he could improve his game further.

Given these defining traits, it’s no surprise that Brunson became one of the NBA’s biggest starts.

By being willing to seize opportunities, staying resilient, and working hard, Brunson overcame challenges that came his way and carved a path towards stardom in a highly competitive league.

The result?

A highly successful career and an era-defining championship win.

So, if you want to be successful like Brunson, take the insights from his story to heart!
